PHYMATOCEROS

Phymatoceros Stotler, W.T. Doyle & Crand.-Stotl. was described as a hornwort genus segregated from Phaeoceros Prosk.  It is distinguished by a suite of characters that include the plants being dioicous, dimorphic and ephemeral.  The gametophytes are quite narrow, do not form rosettes, but produce tubers that terminate central, ventral stalks.  Male plants produce but one antheridium per chamber.  Mature spores are fuscus rather than yellow as in PhaeocerosPhymatoceros is placed into Notothyladaceae (Milde) Prosk. subfamily Phaeocerotoideae Hässel.
